Unwilling Servants refers to individuals forced to labour for the benefit and profit of another. Throughout history human beings have been enslaved, deprived of their freedom to live as they choose and set to labour for the profit of others. This practice continues today around the world, including in the UK, depriving people of their rights in many forms, from indentured workers in India, underpaid labourers in Haiti, to trafficked sex workers here in the UK and Europe. My home city of Liverpool has a long connection to the historical slave trade, and in this blog I will be exploring the connections we have to slavery in the past and in the present, and highlighting the problems and solutions humanity faces in tackling modern slavery and forced labour now and in the future.
